How to Incorporate Your Hobbies, Sports, and Pets into Your Omaha Senior Session
High school graduation is a major milestone, and your senior portraits should be so much more than just a standard smiling headshot against a generic backdrop. This session is a celebration of who you are at this exact moment in time—your passions, your achievements, and the things that bring you joy.
As an Omaha senior portrait photographer, my goal is always to create a personalized, editorial storytelling experience. The best way to make your gallery feel entirely unique to you is by integrating the hobbies, sports, and pets that have defined your high school journey.
Whether you’re a star athlete at Millard North, a talented musician practicing in West Omaha, or a pet owner who can’t imagine a major milestone without your dog, here is the ultimate guide on how to seamlessly (and beautifully) incorporate your favorite things into your senior photos.
Bringing Your Four-Legged Best Friend: Pets in Senior Photos
Your pet is a huge part of your life, so it only makes sense that they should be part of your high school senior portraits. Over the years, I’ve photographed everything from dogs and cats to horses and even show cattle! Incorporating animals adds an instant layer of genuine emotion and fun, but it does require some thoughtful planning.
Choose a Pet-Friendly Omaha Location
Not all locations are ideal for animals. If you want to bring your dog, we’ll want to select a spacious, pet-friendly outdoor area. Chalco Hills Recreation Area in southwest Omaha, Walnut Creek Recreation Area in Papillion, or the gorgeous trails of Standing Bear Lake are phenomenal options with beautiful natural light and plenty of room for your pet to feel comfortable.
Bring a Designated "Pet Wrangler"
This is my number one pro-tip for successful senior photos with pets: do not come alone with your pet. Bring a parent, sibling, or friend who can act as the designated "wrangler." We will typically shoot with your pet for the first 15 to 20 minutes of the session while they are fresh and excited. Once we capture those priceless shots, your helper can take your pet home or keep them occupied while we focus the rest of the session on you.
Pack a Pet Prep Kit
To keep things stress-free, pack a small bag containing:
A clean, neutral-colored leash and collar (avoid bright neon leashes that will distract from the photo).
High-value treats to capture their attention toward the camera.
A favorite squeaky toy.
Waste bags.
A lint roller (essential for removing pet hair from your outfits!).
Showcasing Your Athletic Pride: Sports Senior Portraits
Whether you’ve spent the last four years on the court, on the field, or in the pool, being a high school athlete is a massive commitment. Let's showcase that dedication in a way that feels dramatic, powerful, and artistic.
Accessing Omaha School Facilities
If you want to take photos on your actual high school turf or court—such as the track at Westside High School, the football field at Elkhorn South, or the baseball fields in Millard—we can often make that happen!
Action Step: Reach out to your athletic director or coach early in the planning process to get permission and check availability. Weekday afternoons or summer evenings are typically the easiest times to gain access to Omaha-area fields and gyms.
Elevate Beyond the Standard Team Photo
We aren't here to recreate your yearly school sports pictures. We want to create editorial, high-fashion athletic portraits. Instead of just holding a basketball and smiling, we can play with:
Sunset Silhouettes: Capturing you mid-stride on the track or throwing a ball against a dramatic Nebraska sunset.
Atmospheric Lighting: Using creative angles and shadows inside high school gyms to create a moody, magazine-ready look.
Dynamic Action: Action shots of you serving a volleyball, kicking a soccer ball, or lining up on the blocks.
Showcase Your Gear Creatively
You don't have to wear your full uniform for every sports-related photo. Pairing your varsity letterman jacket with casual jeans, draping your state championship medals over your shoulder, or wearing your jersey unbuttoned over a neutral t-shirt can give your portraits a stylish, lifestyle-inspired edge.
Highlighting Creative Hobbies: Music, Art, and More
Perhaps your passions lie in the arts, academics, or creative hobbies. These elements provide incredible textures, colors, and storytelling opportunities for your senior photography in Omaha.
Musical Instruments & Historic Omaha Backdrops
From acoustic guitars and violins to marching band brass, musical instruments are exceptionally photogenic.
The Vibe: An acoustic guitar looks right at home nestled in the golden grass of Elmwood Park at golden hour.
The Urban Look: Brass instruments and electric guitars pair beautifully with the historic brick, cobblestone alleys, and iron staircases of the Old Market in downtown Omaha.
Instrument Care Note: If you are bringing a delicate wood instrument (like a cello or violin), we will monitor the Nebraska humidity and temperature closely to ensure your instrument stays safe and in tune during the shoot.
Bookworms, Artists, and Creatives
If you are an avid reader, an artist, or a gamer, let’s design a scene that highlights your craft:
For the Artists: Bring a sketchpad, charcoal, or even a canvas and paint. We can capture candid shots of you actually working on your art in an outdoor park or a local natural light studio.
For the Bookworms: Let's shoot in a cozy, independent Omaha bookstore or find a quiet, sun-dappled spot beneath the trees at Lauritzen Gardens with a stack of your favorite classic novels.
Planning Your Custom Omaha Senior Session
The secret to a flawless, multi-faceted senior session is scheduling and outfit coordination. We want your hobbies, sports, or pets to feel like a natural part of the story, not a forced prop.
During our pre-session consultation, we will map out exactly how to transition between your polished, classic portraits and your hobby-focused shots. I suggest choosing one or two main elements to focus on so that your gallery remains cohesive, balanced, and deeply reflective of who you are.
